Sikh and ye shall find despite the fact that a Sikh restaurant is a rarity in the Balti Triangle area. Tucked away on the borders of Springfield, the décor has a definite Indian feel and is licensed. This latter point took me by surprise, although I could have still brought in my own, at a modest corkage charge of £2-50p. Consequently I decided to go down the beer route with a brace of Kingfishers – touchingly, they were obviously out of stock as somebody went next door to the off licence and returned ‘surreptitiously’ with them wrapped in a black bin liner.

Poppadoms came with a very acceptable beige coloured creamy dip and my wife’s starter of Chicken Mali Boti was described as one of the best ever. Praise indeed for slices of tandooried chicken in an extremely tasty cream and spiced sauce. Meanwhile I opted for the Paneer Pakora served up in ‘fish finger’ shaped pieces – fresh batter and one of the best paneer starters that I’ve had.

Unfortunately the main courses, whilst served up in good portions with tender chicken, were a bit disappointing. Both my wife’s Chicken Dhansak and my ‘Balti’ Chicken and Mushroom were rather one dimensional with an overbearing peppery taste. The Garlic Naan was also strange – plenty of garlic but more like an Italian garlic flatbread.

In fairness, the service couldn’t have been more friendly and if you fancy a change from curry, you can go back to the 70s with the menu offering a Prawn Cocktail starter, Fillet Steak and Chips, all washed down with a bottle of Blue Nun.
